Schedule Time for Reflection

Read – Think – Plan

As a leader, schedule time on a recurring basis to reflect. Allow time during your workday for mindful and creative imagination.

Kelly Ketelboeter, acclaimed corporate trainer and consultant, finds reflection time vital for leaders. “Reflection will allow us to silence the other voices that leaders are often bombarded with. By doing so, the leader is able to regroup, focus and gain clarity on what he or she feels is truly important to the company, the employees and those they serve.

It will also give the leader a chance to evaluate progress, celebrate small wins and consider next steps.

A few other questions that leaders can ask:

  • What progress are we making?
  • What’s contributed to that progress?
  • How do we stay on course?
  • Where are we falling off course?
  • How come?
  • What can I do personally to help my team?”

Your reflection time must be “scheduled” time, just as any other important event. Practice the self-discipline required to hold to this time, without interruption. But if it is overcome, reschedule it – don’t skip it. Find an “accountable buddy” to help hold you to this critical element of leadership that not only you need, but your team deserves.

You will find that taking time to reflect, to Read – Think – Plan, positively impacts your customers, your organization, and your team. And, over time, you will find that it becomes a significant, sought-after part of your rhythm to best serve as a leader.
